Located in Hirokawa Town in Fukuoka Prefecture, Marugame Kasuri Orimono is a Kurume Kasuri workshop that specializes in chemical dyeing and machine weaving. Founded in 1868, the workshop has a history of more than 150 years, now carried on by fifth-generation head Shigetoshi Maruyama. The workshop is particularly known for its Tsumami dyeing technique, a painstaking method in which artisans carefully rub color into specific points of the threads by hand. During the factory tour, visitors can even try this delicate Tsumami dyeing technique themselves. Marugame Kasuri Orimono also places strong emphasis on creating apparel and accessories that bring the charm of Kurume Kasuri into everyday life. At the shop and gallery Tateyoko Store + LABO, which opened in March 2025, visitors can enjoy a relaxed shopping experience surrounded by the workshop’s fabrics and products.
This workshop is highly recommended for visitors who want to enjoy both a Kurume Kasuri factory tour and shopping.

After graduating from an agricultural high school, Maruyama studied fashion design at a vocational school, where he began creating clothing using fabrics produced by his family’s workshop. Following a fire in 2013 that destroyed the factory and its looms, he succeeded the family business and rebuilt the workshop. Today he oversees everything from fabric production and product development to sales.

Explore the Many Processes of Kurume Kasuri

After losing its factory and looms in a 2013 fire, Marugame Kasuri Orimono rebuilt its new workshop with the help of nearby weaving houses, which donated machines and tools. Fifth-generation head Shigetoshi Maruyama officially took over the business in 2014. Today, the workshop produces a wide variety of imaginative Kasuri designs, including creative patterns made from repurposed leftover weft threads, playful and original motifs such as lotus roots and musical notes, and vivid designs that highlight the beauty of the Tsumami dyeing technique. During the tour, visitors can try their hand at untying kasuri bindings and Tsumami dyeing, while artisans pause their work to explain the details of their craft.
