Flower Arrangement Experience with Ikebana Master Miwa Anan (2 hrs)
On this program, you will visit Karinsha in the bucolic Sano district of Bungotakada. You will try your hand at flower arrangement under the guidance of Ms. Miwa Anan, an ikebana master whose numerous activities all revolve around flowers. Instead of using specially prepared flowers, you will use everyday flowers and plants, dead leaves, stones, and whatever else you can find around Karinsha. You can choose to make a wreath instead of an ikebana arrangement. You are more than welcome to participate even if you have never tried flower arrangement before. An optional meal plan is also available.
- ● Make the most of nature's bounty: Learn ikebana from Miwa Anan
- ● Change the way you see nature
- ● Enjoy the pleasure of combining materials to create something with your own hands
- ● Tune in with nature and experience a healing time
- ● Enjoy original flower tea after the ikebana experience
- ● Optional meal plans available
- Miwa AnanIkebana master
- Anan discovered the Ohara School of ikebana at 19 and began her training in the art of flower arrangement. In 2015, she renovated an old house from the Taisho era (1912-1926) and opened her ikebana atelier, Karinsha. As an ikebana master, she holds classes and organizes events to create enjoyable, enriching experiences with flowers and plants.
“Creating space by subtraction, ikebana is as ephemeral as a rainbow. The experience is not about whether you can do well; it’s about providing a truly enjoyable time where you can get in touch with nature.”
Visit Karinsha in Southern Bungotakada City
In recent years, Bungotakada City has taken the top spot multiple times in the ranking of the most desirable rural communities to live in. First, you will visit Karinsha, an ikebana atelier in the Sano, an area of the city with beautiful bucolic scenery. Here you will meet ikebana master Miwa Anan, who is engaged in numerous activities revolving around flowers, including holding classes on flowers, growing edible flowers and vegetables, running a cafe, and hosting events. What Ms. Anan consistently values is helping people lead healthy, balanced lives by connecting them with flowers and plants. When you visit her atelier, you are sure to enjoy a moment of relaxing calm.

Enjoy Ikebana by Tuning into Flowers and Plants and Working with Materials Found Nearby
The session begins with a basic lecture on ikebana, after which you will select your favorite vase from a range of uniquely crafted containers. After this, Ms. Anan will take you outside. As you look over the garden and the field, you will be surprised at how ordinary plants you once overlooked suddenly leap out as potential materials for ikebana. The more you search, the more you will find yourself thinking, “This might work!” or “That could be interesting too!” All the while, you can enjoy chatting with Ms. Anan, hearing her many bits of botanical wisdom, and imagining how each material might come to life in an arrangement. There are no limits to the materials you can use. Everything from dried leaves and branches to stones and driftwood is fair game, so gather as much as you like. Once you finish collecting your materials, the ikebana session will begin. As you arrange the materials in the vase, you will begin to see them in a new light, and the impression your piece gives off can change dramatically depending on how you combine the flowers and plants. Enjoy the fascinating way each element brings out the beauty of the others. By the time your ikebana piece is complete, you may find that your way of seeing flowers and plants has transformed—and your mind is full of new ideas and things you want to try next. You will start to wonder what you might find around your own house or what you might want to try later, giving you something to look forward to after you return home.
